Biden Must Act: Imposing Sanctions on Those Responsible for the Detention of Vladimir Kara-Murza

At Astraea, we believe it is crucial to take action against those responsible for the unjust detention of Russian activist, opposition leader, journalist, and historian Vladimir Kara-Murza.

Vladimir has bravely advocated for human rights and spoke out against the Putin regime's war of aggression in Ukraine. Despite this, he has been unjustly detained for nine months and faces a growing list of unfounded charges. As a U.S. legal permanent resident, the United States should join Canada in imposing targeted Magnitsky sanctions on those responsible for his ongoing arbitrary detention and keep pushing for his immediate release. Together with Human Rights First, Free Russia Foundation, Human Rights Foundation, Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, REDRESS, and the McCain Institute for International Leadership, we call on the Biden administration to take action and support a pro-democracy activist and legal resident of the United States who is imprisoned by one of the most repressive governments in the world.

This is crucial for Russian civil society as it sends a clear message that the international community will not tolerate human rights abuses and will hold those responsible accountable.
